I am sitting here blasting Best of You by the Foo Fighters, and the first line is this, "I've got another confession to make, I'm your fool."
I then realized a lot of what I am doing with this blog embodies that line. Most of my teachings come from being a fool and making mistakes.
The more I share these foolish decisions, the more people I hope to help avoid them.
So, in a way, I'm your fool that you can learn from.
My Latest Confession
Onto my latest confession of the moment. This one hurts, but I have worked past it. I am writing this on tax day, and I did not finish my taxes on time and had to file for an extension.
I had everything I needed in March of this year to file on time. I kept thinking, "Oh, I still got time. Let me do this other stuff first."
Days went by, and then the weeks started passing me by. I finally had to bite the bullet and have our CPA file for an extension.
Teachable Moment
Taxes are a stressful time for most small business owners and tax preparers. Humans seem to have a natural ability to procrastinate. If actions are not taken to avoid procrastination, stuff like what happened to me will occur.
So, what have I done to make sure this will not happen next year? I have already started to keep things better organized for the 2023 tax season. I may even write a future post on staying organized for tax purposes with small businesses.
We started an LLC recently for real estate, and I am still learning things as I go. Record keeping is a skill, and I understand why people outsource bookkeeping.
Here are some tips to help us avoid procrastination in the future (if you guys want to hear more about procrastination tips in a future post, let me know in the comments):
Break tasks into smaller, manageable chunks
Set specific deadlines and prioritize tasks
Eliminate distractions during work hours
Establish a work routine
So, with all that said, I'll leave you with this . . .
Let me be your fool and help you avoid my mistakes.
